OET (Occupational English Test) is an international English language test specifically designed for healthcare professionals seeking to register and practice in an English-speaking environment.

It assesses all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking – with an emphasis on communication in healthcare professional settings.

OET Structure

The test is divided into four sub-tests: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

The Listening and Reading sub-tests are tasks common to all professions.

The Writing and Speaking sub-tests are specific to the individual healthcare profession.

  • Listening (approximately 50 minutes)-Note taking on a recorded consultation and a range of questions on a health related talk recording.
  • Reading (60 minutes)-Completion of a health related summary paragraph and MCQ on a longer health related text.
  • Writing (45 minutes)-Writing a profession specific letter of referral or discharge or a letter to inform or advise a patient.
  • Speaking (approximately 20 minutes)-Profession specific role plays with an interlocutor who plays the part of a patient.

Who accepts OET?

OET is accepted by all major healthcare boards and councils in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, UK Nursing Council, Dubai Healthcare City Authority.

OET score is also accepted for various visa categories in Australia and New Zealand.
